CHAPTER 11

Courtship

When Adam and I made love on the dungeon floor at the end of our final session, I crossed a line, blurred the boundaries, and broke the ‘cardinal rule’…but then nothing happened; the whole summer passed with him away. When September came around, we arranged to meet at a pub in Soho.

I did not dress up for the occasion. I wore my favourite black corduroys, a brown turtleneck, a pair of flat red shoes, a turquoise scarf, and a cream coat that I’d bought second-hand. It was how I always dressed and I was determined to avoid pretences. I wore my hair down, my eyes were lightly lined with kohl, I wore mascara, and my cheeks were hot and blushed from an earlier shot of whiskey, the present excitement, and the autumn breeze along the Old Compton sex tease. I felt confident and slightly reckless. I was thinking that it was a one-off, that there was nothing to lose. On the contrary, I would not have passed up the occasion to meet the man whose eyes had hypnotised me for the last two and something years. It didn’t matter whether I liked him or not; I had no expectations. I was meeting Adam the Masochist for the thrill of disclosure, and the aesthetic of closure.

I’m sure I wouldn’t have been so confident meeting Adam that evening if he’d been the first client I’d met outside the dungeon, but in fact, he was the last.
